A weak consumer confidence reading sent shares into negative territory for a portion of the trading day. However, positive news from Boeing (NYSE: BA) regarding aircraft orders triggered buying. The bullish sentiment resulted in the major indexes closing positive on the day despite the dire confidence reading. Word that the Fed considered more stimulus in August added to the bullish fervor. ADP Employment, Chicago PMI and Factory orders should keep things interesting on Wednesday.

Here are 5 Hot Stocks for Wednesday

Greece is a beautiful place. The island nation is home to unbelievable beaches, great restaurants and definitely some of the best looking women on earth. Economically, however, it’s a far different story. The countries free spending ways sent its financial system into a tailspin. Bail out after bail out seemed to be only a temporary fix. Each “helping hand” from the international community was meant to spur enough economic activity to be self sustaining thus slowly lift the economy from its dire straits. However, it never happened, until now.

Greek banks Alpha and EFG Eurobank announced a merger on Monday. Neither one of these institutions trade in the U.S., but shares rocketed by more than 30% once the announcement trading halt was lifted. U.S. traded ADR National Bank of Greece (NYSE: NBG) followed suit soaring by more than 40% on the merger news. The banking operation has a presence in Turkey, the United Kingdom, South Eastern Europe, Cyprus, Malta, Egypt and South Africa. As of December 31, 2009, it operated 575 branches, one private banking unit, one unit for financial institutions, and 10 specialized banking units, and 1500 ATMs. The company was founded in 1841 and is headquartered in Athens, Greece.

The optimism of the bank merger lifted financial shares worldwide. It also worked to send other Greek company stocks higher. Could this be the spark needed to finally save the Greek financial issues? Time will tell, but it’s a solid step in the right direction.

The stock market laughed in the face of the pending Hurricane Irene strike on New York City by climbing sharply on the session. Positive words from Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech fueled the rally despite a topsy turvy trading day. He stated that long term economic prospects for the United States remain on track despite not adding any additional stimulus. Pending Home Sales and Personal Income hit the wire on Monday.

PADORA (NYSE: P) is a really cool service. It’s an Internet radio broadcaster that builds personalized radio stations based on the “genetic code” of music one enjoys. The service utilizes the Music Genome Service as its musical taste matching system. Basically, a program, built by serious music geeks and computer experts, that breaks songs down into their core components finding similarities to what the listener already likes.

It is an advertiser driven/subscription revenue model and the company recently went public to low expectations on the Street. However, PANDORA just reported second quarter earnings that beat analyst’s estimates. Revenue soared 117% to $67 million. Adjusted Net Income climbed from $2.6 million to $3.3 million. Perhaps, most critically, its user base continues to grow. The company reports 37 million users in the second quarter to its free service. This means that Pandora has captured 3.6% of all U.S. radio listeners. The positive news has sent shares sharply higher.

Joe Kennedy, CEO/president stated in a press release, “PANDORA is personalizing radio — and consumers are enthusiastically embracing the dramatically better experience. At the same time, advertisers continue their adoption of PANDORA’s multi-platform ad solutions, resulting in our 6th consecutive quarter of year-over-year triple digit revenue growth. In addition to continued high growth in Web revenue, PANDORA’s mobile advertising revenue for the first time comprised approximately half of total advertising revenue as we lead the way in the nascent but fast growing mobile advertising market. PANDORA continues to grow our market share of U.S. radio as we fundamentally transform one of the last forms of traditional media.”

While the bottom line is improving for the creative service, competition is nipping at its heels. Sweden’s Spotify is the latest threat to PANDORA. Spotify has a much larger library to draw upon and is getting rave reviews from users. Time will tell how PANDORA handles the threats to its business model.

In Hollywood they say that immortality is based on how many people remember you after you go into the great hereafter. If this is the case, Steve Jobs may have actually achieved this ultimate goal of mankind. Not to mention his apparent super human strength surviving a nasty disease that would have killed or at the very least forced a permanent retirement on an ordinary human being. It’s clear that surviving cancer certainly had something to do with his being a billionaire thus able to afford and access the latest medical procedures. However, returning to the helm of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) in a physically weakened state, but hyper creative and energized mentally was truly remarkable.

Now that this visionary corporate leader has decided to step down from his role as the leader of Apple, what will become of the cutting edge innovative company? History tells us that when a powerful leader leaves a company it’s not a good thing. Examples abound. Just take a look at Microsoft’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) chart after Bill Gates stepped down. Going even further in the past, Henry Ford’s departure from the helm of Ford (NYSE: F) and Sam Walton leaving Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) did not bode well for the companies. However, it’s important to remember that Jobs will remain chairman of the board. Of course, this is primarily a symbolic position, but don’t be surprised if Jobs’ ideas and energetic spirit remain at the forefront of corporate leadership. His successor, Tim Cook, is a competent leader but he definitely lacks the charismatic power of Jobs.

Knowing the forward thinking nature of Steve Jobs, it’s possible that he has long-term plans already in place for Apple. Maybe something similar to Ray Kroc and his multi decade guide for the real king of burgers, McDonalds (NYSE: MCD). While this is strictly speculation, if it’s the case, not much is going to change at Apple. Steve Jobs will truly be immortal, don’t worry!

Gold has gone absolutely parabolic on its climb higher. Bursting above its 50-day moving average at the start of July, the precious yellow metal has pushed to $1917.90 per oz prior to pulling back. This sharp increase in price has triggered pundits in both the bullish and bearish camp to go into a frenzy of speculation. The bulls point toward the turmoil in the underlying world economy as evidence that $2000 per oz by the end of 2011 is a given. While the gold bears talk about how over extended price is and that it’s due for a severe pullback. Well, which camp makes the most sense? They both have valid points so let’s take a closer look at both the bull and bear case for the future of gold.

First, let’s start with the bearish case. The bears have a very valid point when they point out that commodities never go straight up. In fact, they often don’t go up at all. Gold was on a flat to downward trajectory for many years. Unlike the stock market, there is no inherent upward drift in commodities, gold included. If you look at gold from this perspective, there is no question that a dramatic pull back is in the cards and soon! Is the $63 per oz drop from the recent highs the start of this pull back? No one knows for sure, but if it is, the next technical support is at $1750 per oz. Bears also point to the fact that economies no longer need gold to function and that it’s an outdated means of exchange in the modern digital world. Not to mention that Central Banks will be forced to sell off their gold reserves to pay the crushing debts of their economies. While these reasons for gold to drop all make sense, the bullish case is also strong.

Bulls point out that a major structural shift in economic stability is taking place. This shift will force investors to continue to buy gold. This is not just the average investor the bull camp is talking about. They mean the Central Banks and other large institutions will continue to purchase gold as security from the turmoil. In fact, the bulls point out that Central Banks are unlikely sell gold to pay debt.

Peter Richardson, chief metal economist for Morgan Stanley Australia explained to Bloomberg, “You sell off your one asset that really would produce a major bang for your buck, and what happens is 12 months down the track, you find that your debt position is still deteriorating. You don’t then have the asset backing in the form of a high gold price for your reserves to bolster your creditworthiness.”

Both bulls and bears make a strong case for the future price of gold. What’s actually going to happen? No one knows for sure, but what ever happens, its going to be interesting!
