JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (ADR) (NASDAQ: JASO) is a Chinese manufacturer of high performance solar cells. The company manufactures and markets both multicrystalline and monocrystalline solar cells. The company does business primarily in the People’s Republic of China. The company has three wholly owned subsidaries, Shanghai JA Solar PV Technology Co., Ltd. (JA Zhabei), JingAo Solar Co., Ltd. (JA Hebei) and JA Solar Technology Yangzhou Co., Ltd. (JA Yangzhou). The company designs, manufactures and markets high-performance solar cells, which are made from specially processed silicon wafers.
Recently in a public interview, JA Solar Holdings CEO Fang Peng provided his expectations on the growth of the sector and the company. JA Solar will continue to outperform the sector over the next five years by tapping expanding demand from home and abroad. The Shanghai-based solar cell manufacturing company aims to become the world’s largest solar panel supplier by the next year. The company expects annual sales to reach 1.3 giga watts, revised upwards from its earlier projection of 1 giga watt. The total cell production capacity is expected to reach 1.8 giga watts by the end of 2010, again revised upwards from 1.5 giga watts.
“We will keep increasing our cell production capacity each year, and growth over the next five years will be higher than the industry average, but the timing and extent of the growth will also be considered,” said Peng. “We will continue to maintain our top status in solar panel production in the future.”
The demand for photovoltaic batteries is expected to reach as much as 12 – 15 giga watts this year and will grow further by 40 – 50 giga watts per annum till 2015.
Peng also said, “I can see strong demand in the third quarter as many investors have tried to install (capacity) as quickly as possible before the subsidies were cut, and some sellers have been replenishing their inventories, so solar panel demand will continue to surge.”
The Company entered into three major contracts: First with Solar –Fabrik AG, a German solar power producer, to supply approximately 70MW of photovoltaic products. Second with Innovalight, Califonia based manufacturer of silicon ink and licenses a proprietary process technology to solar cell manufacturing companies, for joint development of high efficiency solar cells and third with ECN, a leading Institute for energy and environmental research focusing on energy conversation, to jointly develop cost efficient electricity generated through solar energy.
