Power3 Medical Products Inc. (OTCBB: PWRM) Advances Blood Serum Biomarker Test for Alzheimer’s Disease

Company says initial phase of clinical validation trials of NuroPro® AD blood test shows successful diagnoses of different forms of Alzheimer’s, including high-risk patients.

Power3 Medical Products, a leading proteomics company, specializes in the development and commercialization of diagnostic tests for early detection of breast cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. The company is currently conducting a clinical validation study of its NuroPro® blood serum test for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease in collaboration with Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, the director of clinical research at the Cleo Roberts Center of Clinical Research at the Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Arizona.

Woodlands, Texas-based Power 3 recently announced the latest results from the completion of the first phase of clinical validation trials of the NuroPro® PD test, with prospective trials in the United States confirming earlier retrospective studies it started.

NuroPro®, the first blood serum diagnostic test to be available for Alzheimer’s disease, utilizes a panel of blood serum protein biomarkers to determine the probability that a patient has the said degenerative disease.

Power3 said its blood serum biomarker test for Alzheimer’s disease showed successful diagnoses of different forms of Alzheimer’s, a breakthrough seen to advance the diagnostic test’s clinical usefulness.

Commenting on the latest results, CEO Helen R. Park stated in the press release, “Progress thus far of the company’s clinical validation trials confirms our belief that Power3’s NuroPro AD will significantly help physicians make diagnoses and recommend appropriate follow-up and treatment options for their patients, based on the presence of disease. This is a huge advance over only being capable of informing a patient that his or her risk is high.”

According to Power3 president and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Ira L. Goldknopf, “Roughly half of the Alzheimer’s disease patients possess a gene variant that indicates a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than the general population. However, roughly 15% of normal individuals also possess this gene variant. There are also other genetic risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease.

“Therefore, unfortunately, positive genetic tests do not inform the patient that they have the disease. They merely let them know they have a higher risk for developing it.”

Dr. Sabbagh had previously said the preliminary results of the Power3’s study look very promising as clinicians around the world look forward to adding a tool to diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s earlier and therefore give the best care to their patients.

The prospective clinical validation trials’ second phase is slated to commence sometime in late 2009, the report said.
