VIVUS Inc. (VVUS) Company Brief
VIVUS Inc. (NASDAQ: VVUS), the Mountain View, California-based biopharmaceutical company, will see its new weight-loss drug come up for review in front of a FDA panel on July 15th. A positive review on 15th July will be a signal that the FDA may approve the company’s weight-loss drug in October this year. This makes the VIVUS stock an interesting play in the next two weeks. VIVUS had filed a New Drug Application (NDA) for its weight-loss drug Qnexa on March 1, 2010.
Earlier on January 11, 2010, the company had announced new data from an analysis of completed Phase 3 study of avanafil, the company’s investigational drug candidate for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
VIVUS’s success largely depends upon Qnexa, for treatment of obesity, and avanafil, for treatment of erectile dysfunction. This makes the July 15th FDA panel review even more crucial. The response from the FDA panel will determine the future of the company.
In its latest 10Q, the company mentions that Qnexa is combination of drugs that have been individually approved by the FDA. These drugs are commercially available and marketed by other companies and can be substituted for Qnexa. This may lead to Qnexa facing immediate competition, if it is approved by the FDA this year.
The VIVUS stock is down in today’s trading. The stock touched a low of $8.89 today and at last check; it was down 0.73% to $9.53, with volume at 3.30 million.
The VIVUS stock has a 52-week range of $5.55-$13.68. The support levels for the stock are at $9.32, $9.04 and $8.65, while the resistance levels are at $9.99, $10.38 and $10.77.
